Lira, Uganda – Joseph Jones Ogwal, an environmental activist and candidate for the Dokolo North parliamentary seat in 2026, is urging politicians and leaders in Lango to act on the effects of weather changes.
He believes these changes are making life harder for people in the region, especially by reducing crop production and causing poverty.
Ogwal said that the weather changes in Lango are leading to poor crop yields, bad soil, flooding and famine. These issues are pushing people into deeper poverty, as farming is their main source of income.
He stressed that action needs to be taken to help farmers deal with these challenges and find ways to adapt to the changing climate.
One of the main causes of these weather changes, according to Ogwal, is harmful local practices such as farming in swamp areas, cutting down trees and making too much charcoal.
He said that these activities are making the situation worse and people need to stop them in order to protect the environment.
Ogwal also pointed out that the population in Lango is growing, but the land available for farming is not increasing yet there is more pressure on the land and farmers need to adapt to the changes by using better farming methods that can cope with the weather.
Ogwal criticized politicians for focusing on short-term promises, especially during election time, instead of working on long-term plans that will help the community.
He urged politicians to work together and help educate the people about the importance of sustainable farming and how to protect the environment.
He also encouraged farmers to diversify their crops and choose plants that can better survive the changing weather.
Ogwal believes that Lango can overcome the challenges posed by weather changes and improve its agricultural output.
His message is a call for everyone, from leaders to community members, to work together to find solutions to the problems caused by weather changes in Lango.
He believes that with collective action, the region can build resilience and create a more sustainable future.
