Lira, Uganda | One person has died and another is nursing serious injuries following a road crash that occurred on Monday afternoon at Odokomit Trading Centre along the Lira–Kamdini highway in Lira City West Division.

According to the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident happened at around 3:05 PM involving an Isuzu Elf truck, registration number UBD 843V, and a motorcycle, registration number UFN 482B.

Okema revealed that the truck had earlier developed mechanical problems and was parked at Pax Petrol Station. A mechanic, yet to be identified, later picked it up and joined the highway.

However, upon reaching near the Nile Agro factory, the driver attempted to overtake a parked vehicle and instead rammed into the motorcycle from behind.

Both the rider and the passenger whose identities are still unknown sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

The rider, however, was pronounced dead upon arrival at the emergency unit, while the passenger remains in critical condition.

Police visited the scene, documented evidence including a sketch plan, and impounded both the truck and motorcycle.

The vehicles are currently parked at the police yard awaiting inspection by the Inspector of Vehicles (IOV).

The body of the deceased has been taken to the mortuary at Lira Regional Referral Hospital pending postmortem.

A case of a serious road traffic accident that turned fatal has been registered at Lira City West Division Police Station as investigations continue.
