Nairobi, Kenya | Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto has broken his silence over the shocking death of Albert Ojwang while in police custody, calling the incident “heartbreaking and unacceptable” and demanding a swift, transparent, and credible investigation.
In an official statement released from State House, Nairobi, President Ruto expressed deep sorrow over the incident, describing his reaction as one of “utter shock and deep dismay.”
Extending his condolences to Ojwang’s family, the Head of State condemned what he termed as possible “negligence or outright criminality” that may have contributed to Ojwang’s death.
“…This tragic occurrence, at the hands of the police, is heartbreaking and unacceptable…,” President Ruto stated, emphasizing that no member of the National Police Service should forget the heavy responsibility they bear when detaining any individual.
The President reminded the police that every person taken into custody must be treated with utmost care, professionalism, and respect for their dignity and safety.
He underscored the importance of the National Police Service as a trusted custodian of public security and called on officers to uphold the public trust by acting with legitimacy and integrity.
In a strong message to law enforcement, President Ruto said the Police Service must rise to meet the challenge of dealing firmly with crime and lawlessness while eradicating misconduct and unprofessional behavior within its own ranks.
“…I therefore call on the National Police Service to fully cooperate with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority and to take every necessary measure to facilitate a swift, transparent, and credible investigation into the death of Ojwang…,” the statement read.
President Ruto urged the public to avoid premature judgments and allow the investigative process to run its course, assuring citizens that the truth will emerge and justice will be served.
