Prof. Obua Challenges Researchers to Go Beyond Publications and Solve Real-World Problems

Lira, Uganda – At the opening of Lira University’s first Annual Research Dissemination, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation Exhibition Conference, Prof. Celestino Obua, Chairperson of Uganda National Examinations Board and former Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University, called on universities across Uganda to treat research as a central function, not just an academic add-on.

“No university can thrive in the 21st century without prioritizing research,” Prof. Obua emphasized. “It is through research that policies are informed, innovations are born, and development takes shape.”

He challenged researchers to think beyond publication and instead focus on solving real-world problems, encouraging universities to actively engage in grant writing and industry collaborations.

“Know your funder, deliver on time, and communicate results clearly. That is how you secure more support,” he advised.

Prof. Obua also highlighted government efforts to support research and innovation through a structured science and innovation framework, urging universities to tap into it.

The three-day event, which runs from April 23–25, 2025, is themed: “Bridging the Gaps: The Role of Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship in National Social and Economic Transformation.”

Assoc. Prof. Bernard Omech, Director of Graduate and Research Training at Lira University, described the conference as a turning point in the university’s research agenda.

Geoffrey Opio Okello, University Council Speaker and former Deputy Governor of Bank of Uganda, commended the university’s momentum and urged researchers to align their work with national development goals.

“Research must be impactful, evidence-based, and policy-driven,” he said.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng pledged to make the conference an annual activity, emphasizing the importance of multidisciplinary research and intellectual property rights in sustaining innovation.

He lauded the commitment of students and staff to advancing the university’s research mission.

The conference will conclude on April 25, with Hon. Dr. Monica Musenero, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, expected to preside over the closing ceremony.
