Mityana, Uganda | Four senior officials from Mityana District have been arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force over alleged abuse of office and nepotism linked to irregular recruitment practices within the district.
The suspects include Anna Miriam Nassali, the Mityana District Vice Chairperson (LCV); Dr. Fred Lwassampijja, Chairperson of the District Service Commission; Hussein Mukiibi, Secretary to the Commission; and Andrew Ssekibuule, a serving member of the Commission.
According to preliminary investigations, the officials allegedly conspired to manipulate recruitment processes by favouring their relatives, including children and spouses, for various public service positions in the district.
Investigators indicate that several key positions were affected, including Municipal Labour Officer, Education Assistants, Accountant for Mityana Municipality, head teachers, and classroom teachers in different schools across the district.
Authorities say the appointments were conducted without adherence to established employment and appointment procedures.
The accused officials reportedly failed to declare conflicts of interest during the recruitment process, contrary to provisions under the Leadership Code Act and the Uganda Public Service Standing Orders.
Anti-graft officials noted that the ongoing investigations are intended to restore accountability, transparency, and integrity in public recruitment systems within Mityana District while ensuring that qualified applicants are granted equal opportunities in government employment.
The suspects remain in custody as investigations continue.
