Alebtong, Uganda | Two local leaders in Amugu Town Council have been detained over claims of manipulating the government livestock restocking program.
Odongo Levi, Town Agent for Acep Ward, is accused of altering the list of rightful beneficiaries and demanding bribes ranging from UGX 200,000 to UGX 500,000 from residents hoping to benefit.
After meeting with community members, Aliro Lawrence, LC2 Chairperson of Acep Ward, was also arrested. Residents reportedly called for a new town agent during the engagement.
Alebtong Assistant Resident District Commissioner Jimmy Okello confim that four names had been illegally swapped on the beneficiary list. He said the arrests came after locals raised complaints and his office verified the claims.
Okello warned all town agents in Alebtong against misusing government projects. He urged citizens to stay alert and report any official asking for payment for free services.
“Livestock restocking is designed to help the poor, not to enrich a few individuals. Anyone sabotaging it will face legal action. Let’s all work together to keep Alebtong free of corruption,” he said.
Police say investigations are still underway.
