The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has recruited 104 youths from Oyam District, comprising 90 boys and 14 girls, following the latest recruitment exercise in the district.
The exercise, however, was marred by incidents of impersonation, disorderly conduct and interference, leading to the arrest of five people.
Maj. Miriam Apio Okello, the Deputy Northern Uganda Recruitment Leader, said the recruitment exercise was generally smooth despite the minor incidents recorded.
She said four recruits and a guardian who accompanied Sandra Aol from Iceme Sub-county were detained over alleged misconduct and interference with the recruitment exercise.
“Four recruits and one guardian were detained over misconduct and interference with the exercise,” Maj. Apio said.
Some candidates were also disqualified after failing the mandatory medical examinations.
According to Maj. Apio, the medical screening identified conditions including haemorrhoids and hepatitis, while some female candidates tested positive for sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
The UPDF recruitment exercise is aimed at selecting eligible Ugandan youths for military training and service.
Oyam Resident District Commissioner Seg. James Shilaku commended the successful candidates for choosing to serve their country.
He urged them to maintain discipline, commitment and patriotism as they prepare to begin their military training.
The successful candidates are expected to report to their respective UPDF training centres on August 25, where they will undergo further screening and verification before commencement of training.
Authorities have urged the recruits to remain disciplined and comply with all requirements as they proceed with the next stage of the recruitment process.
