Kampala, Uganda | Parliament Commissioner and Otuke District Woman MP Suzan Abeja has asked the Government to provide farmers in Otuke with low-cost irrigation systems and drought-resistant coffee seedlings to boost production and withstand prolonged dry spells.
Abeja made the call today on the floor of Parliament, saying unreliable rainfall is threatening agricultural production and could undermine efforts to promote coffee growing in Northern Uganda.
She said farmers need affordable irrigation technology to sustain production during dry seasons, alongside coffee varieties that can withstand harsh weather conditions.
Abeja said the interventions would help translate President Museveni’s call for increased coffee production into tangible benefits for farmers in the region.
She urged the Government to prioritise Otuke in agricultural support programmes, particularly those targeting irrigation and coffee production.
The legislator said supporting farmers with appropriate technologies and quality planting materials would help increase household incomes and strengthen commercial agriculture in the district.
