Lira, Uganda | Schools in Lira City have urged parents to use the three-week second-term holiday to closely supervise learners, promote revision, control electronic gadget use, and teach children road safety. The call was made during a media visit to selected schools in Lira City on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, ahead of the end of the second academic term.
City Parents School headteacher Okello Amos urged parents to ensure learners use the holiday productively by revising their books and limiting excessive use of phones and other electronic gadgets. He also appealed to parents to teach children road safety while urging schools not to deny learners examinations over fee arrears but instead give parents time to clear outstanding balances.
Okello said City Parents School registered 76 candidates for the City Mock examinations, comprising 46 at the main campus and 30 at the annex. The school ended the term with 1,146 primary learners and 455 nursery learners.
At Light Vocational Secondary School, headteacher Ayo Eric Jasper said the school is progressing well, with candidates undertaking mock examinations ahead of their completion on August 21, while learners in other classes are sitting internal examinations. He urged parents to ensure students remain safe during the holiday, provide scholastic materials, and clear outstanding school fees before the next term.
Ayo said the school had registered 214 candidates for Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and 164 for Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE), bringing the total number of candidates for the 2026 examinations to 378. He expressed optimism that the school would maintain its strong academic performance and urged learners to remain disciplined, respect parents and elders, continue studying, and support their families during the holiday.
On school development, Ayo highlighted the institution’s large farm in Bala, which produces various crops and rears animals. He said the farm is helping the school provide a balanced diet for learners while making the institution increasingly self-sufficient in food production.
Lira Secondary School headteacher Ocoo Isaac urged parents to support their children’s education by meeting school requirements and maintaining honest communication with schools whenever they face financial difficulties. He said the school’s enrolment had dropped from 623 learners at the beginning of the year, with some students failing to return because of financial and household challenges.
Ocoo also called for close parental supervision during the holiday, warning that uncontrolled movements can expose teenagers to social problems, including teenage pregnancies. He stressed the importance of adequate feeding at school, saying proper meals contribute to better concentration and academic performance among learners.
According to the 2026 Ministry of Education and Sports calendar, schools will officially break off for the second-term holiday on Friday, August 21, 2026, and reopen for the third academic term on Monday, September 14, 2026.
