Alebtong, Uganda | Police in Alebtong are holding Mark Opio, the 38-year-old area councillor for Okoto Ward, Aloi Town Council, for the alleged murder of his wife, Jacqueline, 35.
The incident occurred around 3:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, 2025, following a reported domestic altercation.
Preliminary investigations suggest the couple had a long history of a toxic relationship.
According to Daniel Otim, Local Council III Chairperson of Aloi Town Council, he received a call at around 3:45 a.m. from Aria Patrick, the LCI Chairperson of Ryekober Cell, who reported finding Jacqueline’s lifeless body in the couple’s compound after responding to rumors of a fight.
While heading to the scene, Otim said they were informed by a police officer from the local post that Opio had already turned himself in after allegedly dumping the body at the home.
At the scene, police found a handwritten note in which Opio claimed he had caught his wife with another man.
However, investigators say there is no evidence to support this claim.
Otim described Opio as a troublesome leader, citing repeated complaints from the community and a past arrest over wetland encroachment.
He condemned the act, calling on leaders to maintain integrity and urging communities to reject domestic violence in all forms.
The body of the deceased was taken to Alebtong Health Centre IV for a postmortem to establish the cause of death.
Attempts to obtain comment from the North Kyoga Police PRO were unsuccessful as his phone line remained busy at the time of filing this story.
