A three-day co-creation workshop to develop the Home and Community-Based Values and Life Skills (VaLi) Nurturing Guide has opened at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, bringing together stakeholders to shape a practical, inclusive and gender-responsive framework for nurturing values and life skills among children and young people.

Organised by the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development (MGLSD), with support from Foundation for Inclusive Community Help- FICH, the ALiVE Pillar 3 lead, the workshop aims to reach consensus on priority competencies, age categories and key design principles to guide the development of the nurturing guide.
Officially opening the workshop, Franco Tollea, Commissioner at MGLSD, pledged the Ministry’s full support for the initiative and welcomed the government-led approach, highlighting the importance of involving key institutions, including the National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC).
Tollea emphasised that strong collaboration among government agencies and partners would be critical to the success of the process. He noted that the partnership had the potential to deliver meaningful results, provided it was supported by a strong technical working group, which he observed was already evident among participants at the workshop.

The initiative seeks to strengthen the nurturing of values and life skills within homes and communities, recognizing their role in supporting the holistic development of children and young people.
During the workshop, consultant Andrew Luyombo outlined the targets of the VaLi Nurturing Guide and explained how it is expected to work in practice. Participants are working collaboratively to shape a guide that responds to the needs of different age groups while promoting inclusion and gender responsiveness.
The three-day engagement provides a platform for stakeholders to contribute technical expertise, share perspectives and agree on a common direction for the guide’s development.
Once developed, the Home and Community-Based VaLi Nurturing Guide is expected to provide practical guidance for nurturing essential values and life skills in home and community settings, complementing broader efforts to support the development of children and young people.
