Lira, Uganda – A violent incident occurred in Abed-Piny cell, Adekokwok, Lira City East Division, on December 14, 2024, when an alleged thief was burned to death by residents after a failed robbery attempt.
The thief was part of a group of four men who had reportedly stolen a goat belonging to Hidder Akite, a resident of Abed-Piny.
However, three of the thieves managed to flee, while one was caught by the community and subjected to a brutal beating. His motorcycle, a TVS with registration number UFV 406S, was also torched by the mob.
Speaking to reporters, Bonny Ojok, a resident of Abed-Piny, explained that the area had long been plagued by recurring thefts, with goats and other livestock being frequent targets.
Ojok highlighted that this was not the first time these thieves had struck in the area, mentioning prior incidents in Aumi and Atongo-Kongo villages, which had already sparked tensions among residents.
Despite their previous failures in these areas, the criminals were met with fierce resistance in Abed-Piny, where the mob’s anger culminated in the death of the unidentified thief.
Moses Opio, the Local Council One (LC1) Chairman for Abed-Piny, confirmed the incident and expressed his sorrow over the outcome.
He cautioned that such criminal activities would continue to claim the lives of young people if left unchecked.
Opio also pointed to a broader social issue in the community, attributing the rising cases of theft to alcohol and marijuana abuse, which he believes leads many young people to resort to criminal behaviour.
The mayor of Lira City East Division, George Okello Ayo, condemned the incident while acknowledging the growing wave of thefts in the region.
He noted that incidents of livestock theft, as well as burglaries of shops, had been on the rise, alarming local authorities.
Ayo called on residents to stay vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police in order to address the escalating crime rate.
He further stated that the police would be involved in investigating the incident and ensuring that justice is served.
Reports have revealed that the deceased thief hailed from Ober village, Bar Sub County, in Lira District, although his identity remains unknown.
The brutal killing has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of community justice, the role of law enforcement in curbing crime, and the increasing lawlessness in parts of Lira City East Division.
While some may view the actions of the residents as a form of retribution for years of theft, others argue that the incident underscores a larger issue of rising crime and inadequate policing in the area.
As the situation continues to unfold, local authorities and residents are left grappling with the tragic consequences of a justice system that some feel has failed them.
