NEBBI:
In a show of unity and support, Archbishop-elect of Gulu Archdiocese Raphael Wokorach participated in the momentous send-off of over 700 foot pilgrims as they set out from Nebbi’s Namurwotho Chapel on a spiritual journey to the Namugongo Martyrs’ Shrine.
With the 2024 Martyrs’ Day celebrations on the horizon, these devoted individuals will join fellow pilgrims from across Uganda to honor the 45 Christian martyrs who sacrificed their lives between 1885 and 1887.
This year, the Nebbi Diocese has been entrusted with organizing the national Martyrs’ Day observance, lending an added significance to the arduous pilgrimage. Covering a challenging 272-kilometer route, the pilgrims will make strategic stops in Pakwach Town and Karuma, safeguarding their passage through the Murchison Falls National Park.
As Archbishop-elect Wokorach wished the pilgrims well on their spiritual odyssey, he emphasized the importance of faith and dedication in overcoming obstacles, both physical and spiritual. The journey to Namugongo Shrine serves as a testament to the enduring strength of Uganda’s Christian community, who continue to draw inspiration from the legacy of the martyrs.
With the Martyrs’ Day celebrations fast approaching, the commitment and resilience of these foot pilgrims embody the values cherished by the nation, ensuring that the memories and sacrifices of the past remain a guiding force for future generations.
