KALAKI:
Christopher Okumu, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of Kalaki District Local Government, found himself in hot water as he was arrested and briefly detained at Kalaki Central Police Station.
The allegations against him center around his supposed inability to account for millions of shillings allocated for various government projects in Kalaki Town Council.
The arrest occurred at the district headquarters, following orders from Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity Rose Lilly Akello. Akello, together with representatives from different anti-corruption agencies operating under the Inter Agency Forum, kicked off a weeklong inspection aimed at investigating the alleged financial irregularities within the district.
The arrest came as a result of a meeting during which Okumu, as the accounting officer, was reportedly unable to present the necessary documents related to the ongoing government projects in the area. This raised red flags among the officials regarding potential misuse of funds and prompted the authorities to take immediate action.
As the investigation continues, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability within local government structures. The Minister of State for Ethics and Integrity has made it clear that the government will not tolerate any form of corruption or misappropriation of public funds, ensuring that citizens’ trust in public institutions is upheld.
