Lira, Uganda – The Bishop of Lira Diocese, Rt. Rev. Sanctus Lino Wanok, has called on Ugandans to reflect on the deeper meaning of the season by confronting the injustices and hardships affecting the country.
In a passionate Easter message delivered yesterday from his diocesan office, Bishop Wanok said the resurrection of Christ should not only be seen as a symbol of spiritual renewal, but as a powerful call to action inviting believers to rise against social evils, economic exploitation and political silence.
He explained that Easter, traditionally rooted in the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt, carries a continuing message of hope and redemption.
“We are not just celebrating a historical event-we are being reminded that God is always on the side of the oppressed,” the Bishop noted.
Bishop Wanok urged Christians to reflect on the forty days of Lent not as a ritual, but as a journey that builds courage and prepares the heart for responsibility.
He said the resurrection calls all faithful to be bold in truth, just in action and compassionate in service.
Making reference to the recent pastoral letter issued by the Uganda Episcopal Conference titled “The Truth Will Set You Free”, Bishop Wanok echoed the bishops’ concern over widening social, political, and economic inequalities across the country.
He emphasized that it is time for Ugandans to rise above fear and demand systems that serve people not just power.
“Let us use this Easter to renew our commitment to what is right,” he said, urging the faithful to uphold values that foster peace, dignity and equity.
He concluded his message by reminding Christians that salvation is not a passive gift but a responsibility to live lives that uplift others, especially those at the margins of society.
