Caritas International Belgium Launches Climate Resilience Project in Dokolo

Dokolo, Uganda – Caritas International, a non-governmental organization, has launched a one-year climate resilience project targeting flood-affected communities in Dokolo District.

The project was officially unveiled on Monday, January 13, 2025, during a stakeholders’ meeting held in the production hall of Dokolo District.

Francis Ojok, the Project Manager for Caritas Lira Branch, revealed that the initiative focuses on mitigating the impacts of floods in communities from Agwata Town Council, Adok, Okwongodul, Kwera and Adeknino sub-counties.

Key activities under the project include promoting aquaculture, afforestation and distributing recommended fishing gear to affected residents.

Ojok emphasized the importance of community engagement and sustainable practices in addressing the environmental challenges posed by floods.

“This project aims to restore livelihoods and strengthen community resilience to the effects of climate change,” he said.

Tonny Odongo Ocen, the Vice Chairperson of Dokolo District, commended Caritas for its continued support in implementing projects aligned with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) manifesto.

He acknowledged the organization’s contributions to improving livelihoods and enhancing the district’s capacity to tackle environmental challenges.

“We appreciate Caritas for focusing on climate resilience, which is a pressing issue for our communities. This project is timely and will make a significant difference,” Odongo said.

Jaffar Ocaya, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner (ARDC) for Dokolo, closed the meeting by urging community members to comply with Presidential directives prohibiting wetland encroachment.

He highlighted the importance of wetlands in mitigating floods and preserving the environment.

“Wetlands are critical to our ecosystem. I urge everyone to respect and protect them. Together, we can prevent further environmental degradation,” Ocaya said.

The climate resilience project by Caritas International is a significant step towards sustainable development in Dokolo District.

The initiative seeks to empower communities to adapt to the changing climate while promoting environmental conservation.

The project has been well-received by stakeholders and residents alike, reflecting a shared commitment to building a resilient and sustainable future for the region.
