H.E. Ambassador Selma Malika Haddadi, Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), recently welcomed H.E. Ambassador Rebecca Amuge Otengo, Uganda’s Permanent Representative to the African Union and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), who also serves as Dean of the Eastern Region.

The meeting formed part of the African Union Commission’s ongoing consultations with Member States aimed at strengthening the implementation of Agenda 2063, the continent’s long-term development blueprint. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation and coordination ahead of upcoming African Union policy meetings, including the Permanent Representatives’ Committee (PRC) and Executive Council ordinary sessions scheduled to take place in Egypt.

A key area of engagement was the importance of predictable and sustainable financing for the African Union. Both leaders underscored the need for prudent financial management and deliberated on preparations surrounding the proposed 2027 budget, emphasizing the role of sound financial planning in advancing the Union’s strategic objectives.

The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange views on the forthcoming Executive Council and Mid-Year Coordination Meeting expected later in June 2026. These engagements are considered vital platforms for aligning continental priorities and strengthening collaboration among Member States and AU institutions.

Ambassador Haddadi and Ambassador Otengo reaffirmed the importance of continued engagement, close coordination, and collective ownership among African Union Member States and the Commission to ensure the success of key policy organs and the effective implementation of Africa’s development agenda.

The discussions reflected the African Union’s commitment to fostering unity, cooperation, and shared responsibility in driving the continent’s socio-economic transformation and achieving the aspirations outlined in Agenda 2063.
