Ķole, Uganda | A domestic dispute turned fatal in Kole District after a man allegedly hacked his wife to death before taking his own life by hanging.
The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of Monday at Te-Ibule Cell, Western Ward B, Bala Town Council, sending shockwaves through the local community.
According to the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the deceased have been identified as Atenge Sam, 45, and his wife, Atim Joan, 39, both peasant farmers and residents of Te-Ibule Cell.
Preliminary police investigations indicate that the couple developed a misunderstanding at their home at around 1:00 a.m., which escalated into a violent confrontation. During the altercation, Atenge allegedly picked up a panga and inflicted fatal injuries on his wife.
Police suspect that after realizing that his wife had died, Atenge took his own life by hanging himself inside their house.
The incident was reported to Police by Omara Jackson, the LC I Chairperson of Te-Ibule Cell, prompting a team of investigators led by the District Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) and homicide detectives to visit the scene.
The bodies were recovered and transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem examination. Police also recovered a panga and a rope believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes.
Investigators recorded statements from witnesses as inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident continue.
Police revealed that the couple had been cohabiting for some time before the fatal incident.
Speaking on the matter, SP Okema strongly condemned the act and expressed concern over the increasing cases of domestic violence among couples.
“This is yet another sad incident. We strongly condemn such barbaric acts, which are becoming common among married couples. We encourage family heads, clan leaders, and religious leaders to support couples in resolving disputes peacefully,” he said.
He further urged couples to openly discuss their grievances and seek guidance or counselling before disagreements escalate into violence.
The incident adds to a growing list of domestic-related deaths in the region, highlighting the need for stronger community interventions aimed at promoting peaceful conflict resolution within families.
