Alebtong, Uganda | Over 70 head teachers from both primary and secondary schools in Ajuri County have been commended for transformative achievements in academic leadership, teacher discipline, and professional development, following a high-level administrative engagement chaired by Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Mathias Lutwama.

Held on Thursday, May 29, 2025, the meeting brought together senior education stakeholders and district officials at Alebtong District headquarters, including Assistant RDC Jimmy Okello, LC5 Chairperson DK Odongo, District Councillor Hon. Bena Acen, and District Inspector of Schools Mr. Okalabo Pius.

One of the most notable accomplishments highlighted was the consistent implementation of weekly learner assessments aligned with Uganda’s revised curriculum.

Deputy RDC Lutwama praised the head teachers for embracing the competency-based learning model, resulting in improved academic performance and early identification of learner needs.

Lutwama said that that level of commitment to continuous assessment was ensuring that pupils and students in Ajuri County were not only meeting national standards but exceeding them in both understanding and retention.

The scrutiny of duty and attendance records by school heads has also led to marked improvements in teacher punctuality and accountability.

According to education officials, this has created additional space in the school timetable to support learners with special needs, a move applauded by the inspectorate.

The professional growth of educators in Ajuri was also celebrated. A rising number of teachers have enrolled for bachelor’s and master’s degrees, signaling a shift towards evidence-based pedagogy and more rigorous classroom practices.

To build on this momentum, Deputy RDC Lutwama proposed several complementary reforms aimed at institutional sustainability and staff welfare:

  • Corporate Welfare Initiative: Each teacher should receive four daily meals—breakfast, lunch, evening tea, and supper—separate from their existing remuneration. The proposal aims to improve morale, focus, and overall staff wellbeing.
  • Innovative Resource Matrix: Schools are encouraged to capitalize on the capitation grant system, where increased student enrollment results in greater government funding. Lutwama urged head teachers to strategically align school priorities with this funding model.
  • Market-Relevant Curriculum Integration: Core subjects such as biology, chemistry, mathematics, and geography should incorporate real-world exploration and field-based learning. “We must encourage pupils to connect what they learn with practical experiences,” Lutwama stressed.

In closing, Deputy RDC Lutwama called on all head teachers to remain united in purpose and proactive in applying homegrown solutions to local challenges.

He reiterated that education reform is a shared responsibility and praised the gathering for fostering a culture of innovation, discipline, and professional excellence.

The meeting concluded with traditional blessings and strong commitments from district leaders to support the proposed reforms and uphold quality education as a pillar of development in Alebtong District.
