Soroti, Uganda | Clinison Medical Centre officially launched its specialized Eye Clinic on Friday, 30 May 2025, at its facility in Owalei, Opuyo, Soroti East Division, marking a significant advancement in healthcare services for Soroti City and the wider Teso sub-region.

The event was attended by key dignitaries including HRH Papa Raphael Otaya, Cultural Head of the Kumam; HRH Papa Paul Jones Eganda, President of Ateker International Development Organisation (AIDO Network International) and Guest of Honour; Andrew Ocole, Prime Minister of the Iteso Cultural Union; alongside international guests from the UK and Canada, government officials, health professionals, clients, and Clinison staff.

Founded in October 2023, Clinison Medical Centre has rapidly established itself as a leading health service provider in Soroti and the Teso region, offering a broad range of medical services such as general medicine, paediatrics, maternity care, minor surgeries, diagnostics including ECG, immunization, ENT care, family planning, pharmacy services, among others.

Prior to the launch of the Eye Clinic, patients requiring specialized ophthalmic care frequently traveled to distant facilities in Tororo and beyond.

The new clinic will now provide essential eye care locally, easing both financial and logistical burdens on patients.

In his keynote address, HRH Papa Paul Jones Eganda reaffirmed AIDO’s commitment to partnering with Clinison to elevate the centre into a premier healthcare institution within Uganda and East Africa.

He emphasized the importance of patient experience and psychological care as foundational to quality treatment.

Eganda also announced ongoing negotiations to secure advanced eye-care equipment and called for international collaborations, particularly with experts from the UK and India, to introduce cutting-edge technology to the clinic.

Clinison’s Public Relations Officer, Ocen Christopher, highlighted findings from outreach programs which revealed high demand for eye care services in Teso, underpinning the decision to establish the specialized clinic.

He reiterated the centre’s dedication to delivering accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare.

Representing the Soroti City Health Officer, Ecode Emmanuel praised the initiative, urging community unity and support for continued health development.

He noted the ongoing socio-economic challenges in the post-conflict Teso region and stressed the importance of holistic health approaches, including attention to dental health, which remains a concern locally.

Dr. Jane Agwaru, CEO of Clinison Medical Centre and a diaspora returnee, reflected on her personal journey and the pressing need for enhanced eye care in Uganda, a country with fewer than 50 ophthalmologists.

Inspired by a 2024 eye camp that treated 600 patients in three days, Dr. Agwaru outlined plans to expand the clinic’s diagnostic and surgical capabilities within two years to include cataract and trauma surgeries.

She called for partnerships and funding to support this growth, underscoring the centre’s commitment to patient dignity and comprehensive care.

HRH Papa Raphael Otaya offered prayers for the success and health of Dr. Agwaru and the clinic’s leadership, highlighting the facility’s mission to serve all communities guided by respect and compassion.

Andrew Ocole, Prime Minister of the Iteso Cultural Union, stressed the importance of education, particularly for girls, as a key to community development.

He outlined a 10-year plan focused on improving educational standards and providing scholarships to support youth career development.

Ocole welcomed the clinic’s role in boosting local welfare and employment, called for collaboration on insurance schemes for disability and old age, and urged the Iteso diaspora to invest in their home region.

The launch of Clinison Medical Centre’s Eye Clinic represents a transformative step for healthcare access in Teso, promising to reduce travel distances for patients and improve health outcomes through specialized, community-focused services.
