Soroti, Uganda – A massive fire swept through Amukaru Cattle Market in Arapai, Soroti City this evening, reducing over 100 businesses- including bars, restaurants, and market stalls – to ashes.
The blaze has left traders and their families devastated, stripping them of their primary sources of income.
Amukaru Market, a major commercial hub operating every Thursday, attracts traders from across Teso sub-region and beyond.
Its destruction is a severe blow to the local economy.
John Baptist Emukoki, Councilor for Aloet Ward in Soroti East Division and Chairperson of the Social Services Committee, described the loss as catastrophic.
“It’s deeply concerning that so many individuals have lost their businesses, especially at a time when the economy is already struggling,” he said.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but preliminary reports suggest it may have been sparked by a discarded cigarette or another source.
Authorities are investigating the incident to establish the exact cause.
Local officials have pledged support for the affected traders, but the scale of the damage means recovery will take time.
The disaster has also raised concerns about fire safety measures in busy commercial areas and the need for improved emergency response systems.
Despite the tragedy, the Soroti community is rallying to support those affected, with hopes that swift assistance will help businesses rebuild and restore livelihoods.
