Lira, Uganda – The President of Lira City Development Forum, Akeny Emmanuel, has called on all residents and business owners to take responsibility for keeping the city clean.
Speaking to the press on February 27, 2025, Akeny emphasized that maintaining cleanliness is a collective duty, not just the responsibility of the city authorities.
Reports have ranked Lira among the dirtiest cities in Uganda, a situation Akeny attributes to poor waste management by residents and business operators.
He urged traders and households to properly collect and dispose of their waste by coordinating with garbage collectors.
In a bid to address this issue, the Lira City Development Forum, in collaboration with Lira City Council, has launched the “Keep Lira City Clean and Green” campaign.
As part of the initiative, a major city-wide clean-up exercise will take place on Friday February 28, 2025.
Akeny called on students, bankers, vendors and all city dwellers to actively participate in the clean-up, stressing that a cleaner city benefits everyone.
He highlighted the recent support from Centenary Bank, which funded the purchase of waste segregation bins now placed at Lira Main Market to manage waste separation.
Akeny also reminded residents that keeping the city clean goes beyond just disposing of garbage properly.
He urged the public to discourage littering and to guide pedestrians to avoid stepping on grass along the streets.
He reiterated that city cleanliness is a shared responsibility and requires continuous commitment from everyone.
