By Baptist Opua

Alebtong, Uganda | Dr. Mercy Lakisa, the NRM frontrunner for the Alebtong District Woman MP seat, received a significant spiritual and political endorsement during a courtesy visit to Abongodayng Parish, where local catechists formally blessed her candidacy.

In a symbolic gesture, the catechists likened their act of blessing to the biblical moment when Isaac blessed Jacob, expressing their unwavering support for Dr. Lakisa’s parliamentary ambitions.

The event drew religious leaders from multiple parishes, all affirming her leadership and contribution to the district’s development.

During her visit today, Dr. Lakisa made donations that included cash for the parish Savings and Credit Cooperative Organization (SACCO), along with soya seeds, soap, and sugar to assist catechists families.

She encouraged the clergy to remain committed to promoting values that inspire transformation in the community.

She urged them to continue serving God with joy and to act as pillars of moral guidance in Alebtong.

Head Catechist Tobia Hadline Odongo told the gathering that the parish had long awaited the opportunity to host Dr. Lakisa and offer their blessings.

He noted that her past contributions had significantly benefited the community, particularly the youth.

He highlighted her piglet distribution programme, valued at over UGX 60 million, which reached youth groups in all 69 parishes of the district.

Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Benard Aporo advised Dr. Lakisa to channel her efforts towards improving key sectors like education and health.

He emphasized that Alebtong needed leaders who were both charismatic and development-oriented and suggested that her profile suited such expectations.

Catechist Tom Richard Ogwang from Akwete remarked that many politicians had lost sight of their purpose by focusing on personal interests.

He pointed out, however, that Dr. Lakisa had taken a different path—one marked by genuine service—which had earned her the respect of the church and the community.

In his remarks, Moses Vicky Otiti compared Dr. Lakisa’s political journey to the biblical story of David facing Goliath.

He encouraged her to be fearless and assured her that the blessings from the catechists were a sign of spiritual confidence in her success.

Elvis Jacklien Otyama, a catechist from Uganda Martyrs Ayumu, stated that Dr. Lakisa had consistently supported young people both in the church and throughout the district.

He praised her for blending political leadership with compassion and service.

Currently the frontrunner for the 2026 Alebtong Woman MP race under the NRM ticket, Dr. Lakisa’s campaign continues to gain ground.

Her consistent engagement with faith leaders and vulnerable communities has reinforced her image as a candidate who blends development with moral leadership.
