DREAMS Delivers Livestock to Empower Oyam’s Vulnerable Youth

By Solomon Okello

Oyam, Uganda – In an innovative approach to youth empowerment, DREAMS, a non-governmental organization operating in Oyam District, has provided 29 goats to support the livelihoods of ten juvenile groups and six vulnerable individuals in Oyam Town Council.

The initiative focuses on bridging the gap between vocational skills training and sustainable economic opportunities.

Over the past year, the beneficiaries have been part of DREAMS’ program, learning trades such as hairdressing, motorcycle mechanics, and tailoring.

The provision of livestock is a continuation of DREAMS’ holistic approach to fostering independence and community integration.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Mr. Obangkwon Mark, a representative of the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Oyam District, applauded the initiative.

“This program exemplifies how targeted support can transform lives. The goats are a starting point for beneficiaries to build sustainable incomes and I urge them to manage this resource wisely,” he said.

The goats, which were fully vaccinated and certified healthy, are expected to provide immediate and long-term benefits, such as income from breeding and farming.

DREAMS ambassador Ms. Alego Restiutor emphasized the importance of continuity in the program.

“Our enrollment process happens every two years, allowing more individuals to access life-changing opportunities. These goats symbolize not just support but a challenge to embrace responsibility and productivity,” she explained.

For recipients like Teddy Akello, the gesture is life-changing. “This goat is more than just livestock—it’s a chance to create a future. I am committed to caring for it and making the most of this opportunity,” she shared with optimism.

DREAMS’ multifaceted approach, combining skill-building with resource provision, sets a model for community-focused development.
