Agago, UgandaIn a tragic case that has gripped the nation, a Special Forces Command (SFC) soldier from Oyam District, Private Ameny Bonny, aged 32, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the 5th Division Military Court Martial for the murder of three people, including a one-year-old child, in Ngora East Village.

The court, presided over by Col. Peter Musherewe found Ameny guilty of three charges: attempted murder, desertion from duty, and unlawful abduction.

The hearing, which concluded yesterday, 20th November 2024, revealed shocking details of the events leading to the October 20, 2024, killings.

According to the UPDF 5th Division Spokesperson Edrin Mawanda, Ameny abandoned his post at Pakondong Detach to search for his wife, Angom Betty, who had allegedly disappeared with UGX 16.5 million he had entrusted to her to start a business.

Overcome with anger and frustration after receiving no satisfactory answers from the police or family members, Ameny armed himself and set out to locate her.

Upon arriving in Ngora East Village, Paimol Subcounty in Agogo District, Ameny reportedly abducted a man called Obita Richard at gunpoint, demanding to be taken to his wife.

When a crowd began questioning his actions, he opened fire, killing three people, including the infant and injuring two others.

During the trial, Ameny confessed to all charges, attributing his actions to emotional distress and the financial betrayal he suffered. “I was consumed by anger and stress,” Ameny told the court.

The government prosecutor, Darius Agaba, acknowledged Ameny’s confession and requested leniency, emphasizing that this was his first offence and noting his responsibilities as a father of three and a guardian to his sisters.

However, the court delivered a life sentence, citing the severity of the crimes and their devastating impact on the victims’ families.

Col. Musherewe stated, “This court has considered all evidence and circumstances. While the confession is noted, the gravity of this tragedy demands a stern punishment.”

Deputy 5th Division Commander Col. David Opeero lauded residents for not resorting to mob justice. “The community’s restraint ensured that justice was served through proper legal channels,” he said.

The court’s decision sends a strong message about the sanctity of life and the consequences of taking the law into one’s hands. Meanwhile, the victims’ families continue to mourn the irreplaceable loss of their loved ones.

This tragic case highlights the need for better mental health support systems for soldiers, who often face immense stress and personal challenges. It also serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of unchecked anger and the importance of seeking peaceful resolutions to personal disputes.

Ameny will spend the rest of his life behind bars, a stark conclusion to a story of betrayal, anger, and irreversible tragedy.
