Lira, Uganda | The Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees, Sam Engola,who’s also Erute South MP has commended Ugandans for turning up in large numbers to participate in the Local Council (LC) elections, describing the exercise as a demonstration of the country’s commitment to grassroots democracy.
Engola expressed gratitude to all citizens who took part in the nationwide polls, saying the impressive voter turnout reflected the importance communities attach to electing leaders who directly serve them at the village level.
The minister said he witnessed the enthusiasm firsthand at Wiodyek A Village in Wiodyek Sub-county, Lira District, where he cast his vote alongside many residents who turned out in large numbers to elect their village chairperson.
He noted that local council leaders remain the backbone of grassroots governance, serving as the vital link between communities and the central government while promoting effective service delivery and citizen participation.
According to Engola, LC leaders play a critical role in maintaining security, resolving local disputes, mobilising residents for government development programmes, and ensuring accountability within their communities.
The minister also welcomed the performance of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), saying the ruling party registered a landslide victory in many parts of the country during the elections.
He congratulated all the successful candidates and urged the newly elected leaders to work diligently, promote unity, and prioritise the needs of the communities they have been entrusted to serve.
