Kole District – In a bold move, students at Okwerodot Seed Secondary School in Adagani village, Okwerodot parish, Kole District, Uganda, staged a strike on June 27, 2024, protesting alleged mismanagement and poor conditions at the school. The strike, which began at 5:00 AM, saw students locking out key school administrators, prompting a swift response from local law enforcement and district leaders.
The students, who had been harboring grievances for months, presented a list of demands, including the removal of the headteacher, deputy headteacher, and school bursar, citing abuse of power, neglect of duties, and poor welfare. They also complained about the lack of evaluative exams, inadequate medical supplies, irregular teacher attendance, poor quality meals, and insufficient lighting in dormitories.
Teachers joined the students in their protest, echoing concerns about unimplemented resolutions, poor welfare, and abusive language used by the school administration. The school’s declining enrollment, which had plummeted from 280 to 93 students over two years, was also highlighted as a sign of the institution’s failing reputation.
In response to the strike, a high-level meeting was convened, led by the Kole Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Josephine Omara Olili, and attended by school administrators, teachers, parents, student leaders, and district officials. The meeting resulted in several resolutions, including the transfer of the headteacher, deputy headteacher, and school bursar, the introduction of a suggestion box for students to report grievances anonymously, enhanced supervision of teachers, and the reopening of locked offices.
The strike and subsequent meeting have brought to light the urgent need for effective communication and proper management within educational institutions. The swift response by police and district leaders demonstrates the importance of collaborative efforts in resolving conflicts and fostering a conducive learning environment.
