Lira, Uganda – For the first time since its launch in 2017, the vibrant Erute North Festival (ENF) will not take place this year, leaving residents of Aromo, Ayami, Agweng, Ogur and Agweng Town Council in Erute North Constituency deeply disappointed.
The festival, renowned for its wide array of activities such as football, netball, volleyball, bicycle riding, walk races and teenage career-building workshops, has been a cornerstone of talent promotion and community bonding for eight consecutive years.
In a press release, Mr. Chris Onang, alias Ocoromac, a committed ENF stakeholder, announced that the festival’s board, in consultation with various partners, made the “careful and heedful decision” to postpone the 2024 edition to early 2025.
According to Onang, the postponement is necessary to realign the games and accommodate potential changes to the event’s structure.
The exact dates and event categories will be announced via official ENF platforms.
Onang expressed gratitude to sponsors, particularly Dr. Tonny Opeto, Erute North Parliamentary Aspirant for the 12th Parliament and other supporters who have contributed to the festival’s success since its inception.
He assured the public that succeeding editions would return to their usual December schedule.
The festival’s postponement has elicited mixed reactions from the public.
Mr. Ocwic Moses, an ENF coordinator, acknowledged the disappointment among residents but appealed for patience.
“The festival has been of immense value, offering trophies, bicycles, cash tokens, and other prizes to outstanding participants,” he noted.
For locals like Morish Ojok of Odoca Village, Aromo Sub-County, the festival’s absence is a bitter pill to swallow.
“ENF has played a huge role in my life, promoting my football talent, exposing me to wider communities, and providing emotional relief,” he said, expressing his deep attachment to the event.
The postponement marks a temporary pause in Erute North’s festive tradition, stakeholders remain optimistic that the upcoming edition in 2025 will return stronger, continuing its mission to empower, inspire, and unite the community.
