Gulu, Uganda | Mzee Nathan Okori Adiyo, the 97-year-old father of the late former Speaker of Parliament Jacob Oulanyah, has died on March 20, 2026 — the exact date his son passed away four years ago.
Okori’s death occurred at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor, where he had been admitted after developing breathing complications. Family and officials said he had been rushed to the facility two days earlier before his condition worsened.
The rare coincidence has drawn public attention across Uganda, with many describing it as a poignant and emotional moment for the family and the nation.
Jacob Oulanyah died on March 20, 2022, in Seattle, United States, while receiving specialized medical care.
His death was officially announced by President Yoweri Museveni on the same day.
Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Norbert Mao confirmed the passing of Mzee Okori, describing the timing as “uncanny,” and noting that the elderly man had been hospitalized shortly after falling ill.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among also expressed condolences, extending sympathies to the bereaved family and acknowledging the loss as a deeply painful one.
Mzee Okori had lived a relatively private life, but remained a respected elder in his community and a central figure in the family of one of Uganda’s most prominent political leaders.
Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
