Five Dead, Including Two Infants, as Heavy Rains Wreak Havoc in Kampala

Kampala, Uganda – A devastating downpour early this morning has left five people dead and caused widespread destruction across Kampala.

The intense rainfall led to severe flooding, sweeping away pedestrians, causing motor accidents, and destroying property.

Authorities have confirmed the recovery of five bodies so far. Three unidentified individuals were found in the Kinawataka area, while two children, Otim Kisa Eliza, aged 3, and Ochaka Chon, just 11 months old, tragically drowned inside their home in Mulimira Zone, Bukoto.

The children’s mother, Lenunu Rose Mary, had reportedly locked them inside while she was away at work.

She has since been arrested by Kira Road Police on allegations of negligence, as neighbors claim she had left them unattended on multiple occasions.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police, in coordination with the Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services, continues to respond to multiple emergency calls across the city.

The flooding has brought Kampala to a standstill, with roads submerged, vehicles stranded, and businesses disrupted.

In some areas, fast-moving water has turned streets into raging torrents, endangering the lives of residents attempting to navigate through the chaos.

“We strongly advise the public to stay indoors during heavy downpours unless movement is absolutely necessary. Boda boda riders and motorists should avoid flooded roads to prevent accidents,” stated Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire.

The tragic deaths of the two children in Mulimira Zone have sparked debate about child safety and parental responsibility in low-income neighbourhoods.

The arrest of their mother raises concerns about the struggles of working parents, particularly those in informal jobs, who often leave their children unattended due to financial constraints.

The bodies of the deceased have been transported to the City Mortuary in Mulago for postmortem examinations. Authorities have assured the public that updates will be provided as investigations continue.

As Kampala mourns the lives lost, this tragedy serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by extreme weather and the urgent need for long-term flood prevention measures.

In the meantime, residents are urged to remain vigilant and prioritize safety during this rainy season.

Key Safety Measures During Heavy Rains:

1. Avoid unnecessary movement to prevent accidents.
2. Motorists and boda boda riders should not attempt to cross flooded roads.
3. Ensure children are supervised at all times, especially in flood-prone areas.
4. Secure homes and property to minimize damage.

The city braces for more rain in the coming days, hoping that lessons will be learned before another tragedy unfolds.
