Lira, Uganda – Former Oyam South MP Issa Otto Amiza has strongly condemned the recent attack on three journalists in Oyam District, calling for respect for press freedom and the safety of media professionals.
The incident occurred last week in Minakulu Town Council, where journalists Solomon Okello (Dokolo Post), Eman Yonah Oruk (Shine FM), and Woo Chris (Voice of Lango FM) were assaulted while covering a political event for Oyam Woman MP Santa Alum Ogwang.
The attack has sparked widespread outrage, with many questioning the growing threats against journalists in the region.
In his statement, Otto cautioned journalists to remain committed to independent and unbiased reporting, emphasizing that accuracy is critical when covering political affairs.
He urged media practitioners to uphold journalistic ethics while calling on the authorities to ensure their safety.
Otto noted, stressing the need for all stakeholders to protect media freedom as the press plays a vital role in democracy and journalists should not be subjected to violence for simply doing their job.
The attack has raised concerns over the working environment for journalists, especially those reporting on political matters.
Media organizations and press freedom advocates have since demanded swift investigations and accountability for the perpetrators.
Journalists are urged to remain vigilant while authorities are called upon to guarantee their protection.
