Alebtong, Uganda | Authorities in Alebtong District are investigating fresh unrest at Amugu Agro Technical Institute after students staged a protest on Thursday, citing concerns over the management of the institution.
The early morning demonstration saw students abandon classes and march to the Resident District Commissioner’s (RDC) office, where they sought intervention over what they described as persistent administrative challenges.
Assistant Resident District Commissioner Lameck Ongom said the students presented grievances touching on leadership, accountability, and the general running of the school.
“This is not an isolated incident. Similar concerns were raised in the past, and we are now engaging all stakeholders to find a lasting solution,” Ongom said.
He added that district leaders, security officials, and the school administration will hold meetings with student representatives to address the issues and ensure learning resumes without further disruption.
The latest protest mirrors a 2024 incident at the same institution that resulted in arrests and dismissals, raising concerns about recurring instability at the school.
Education stakeholders say repeated unrest points to deeper governance challenges that require urgent attention to safeguard the academic environment.
When contacted, Principal Kamgwago said he was away in Kampala on official duties at the time of the protest.
He dismissed claims of mismanagement and instead blamed the unrest on external influence.
“There are individuals, including some staff and local leaders, who are inciting students,” he said, adding that disciplinary action will be taken against those involved in the strike.
District authorities have since appealed for calm and urged students to return to class as dialogue continues.
By press time, no arrests had been reported, but officials indicated that investigations into the matter were ongoing.
