Soroti, Uganda – The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Teso Affairs, has pledged 400 iron sheets and UGX 500 million for the construction of a 15-classroom block at Soroti Secondary School to address its worsening classroom shortage.
During his visit to the school, Dr. Kenneth Ongalo Obote, Minister of State for Teso Affairs and MP for Kalaki County, acknowledged the school’s challenges in managing its 5,683 students.
He praised the administration for upholding discipline and academic excellence, describing Soroti SS as one of Uganda’s top schools.
Dr. Ongalo, a former student of Soroti SS, reflected on how the school’s population has grown tenfold since his time there 40 years ago.
Encouraging students to remain determined, he said, “Being at Soroti SS is a blessing. Challenges will come, but never give up. Stay focused, believe in yourself, and embrace our school motto: Work and Pray.”
Headteacher Oluka Wilfred Akeriau expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the urgency of additional classrooms.
Due to limited space, some students are forced to study under trees, affecting learning conditions.
“Soroti SS is a national school, bringing together students from different ethnic backgrounds, including Iteso, Baganda, Bagisu, Kumam, Langi, Basoga and Indians,” Akeriau said.
He noted that the new classroom block would reduce congestion and improve the learning environment.
Despite the government’s pledge, the school administration also called for the fulfillment of other long-standing promises, including the provision of a school bus, computers and other learning resources.
They urged the government to fully support Soroti SS as it continues to cater to an ever-growing student population.
