Alebtong, Uganda – The government is intensifying efforts to transform Alebtong District’s economy through key development programs, including the Parish Development Model (PDM), Technical Vocational Training, Emyooga, Youth Livelihood Program, among others.
According to Mathias Lutwama, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) of Alebtong, these initiatives are set to boost household incomes and create jobs as Uganda advances its National Development Plan IV (NDP IV).
Speaking on the progress of government programs, Deputy RDC Lutwama highlighted the impact of the Parish Development Model (PDM) in Alebtong.
Under this initiative, all 69 parishes in the district have received a revolving fund aimed at empowering households engaged in agriculture and animal husbandry.
So far, 6,726 households have benefited, each receiving UGX 1 million as startup capital. Furthermore, starting March 25, 2025, the government will release an additional UGX 50 million per parish, which will be disbursed directly to beneficiaries via mobile money, with withdrawal charges fully covered by the government.
In a bid to develop a skilled workforce and promote industrialization, the government has constructed two modern technical institutes in Alebtong: Amugu Agro Institute and Abia Technical Institute.
These institutions train youth in mechanics, automotive engineering, fashion design, agronomics, and architecture, with full government sponsorship.
Additionally, two private technical institutes, Unity Technical Institute and Amugu Community Technical Institute, receive government welfare support to sustain their operations and enhance vocational training.
The Emyooga Initiative, which focuses on empowering carpenters, boda boda riders, women entrepreneurs, and veterans, has continued to receive government support.
According to Deputy RDC Lutwama, out of 36 registered Emyooga groups, 25 SACCOs have received an additional UGX 20 million each, boosting their financial capacity. This is separate from the earlier UGX 30 million and UGX 50 million per SACCO disbursements.
The initiative aligns with President Yoweri Museveni’s vision of cooperative banking, ensuring that the funds revolve within business groups to sustain enterprise growth.
Deputy RDC Lutwama emphasized that these government programs are critical to the country’s monetization strategy and the goal of building a middle-class economy by 2040.
The PDM, technical skills training, and Emyooga are equipping households, youth, and businesses with the financial and technical resources needed to boost productivity and reduce poverty in Alebtong.
“The government is committed to ensuring that these programs succeed in transforming the lives of Ugandans. We encourage all beneficiaries to use these funds productively to achieve long-term financial stability,” Lutwama stated.
