Iguli Primary School in Amwoma Sub-county has returned to Dokolo District with a trophy after impressing at the National Music, Dance and Drama (MDD) Competition held in Iganga District.

The school represented Dokolo at the national competition after its team of 60 pupils emerged top at the regional MDD competitions held at Boroboro in Lira City from August 14 to 16, 2026.

Although the official national results are yet to be released, the Iguli team won a trophy for its performance in “Gulu Adogeryo,” one of the 13 items it presented at the competition.

The pupils were welcomed back at the school in Amwoma Sub-county, where school and district officials commended them for showcasing their talent on the national stage.

Iguli headteacher Betty Agweng attributed the achievement to teamwork, commitment and the pupils’ dedication to MDD.

Agweng said her passion for MDD had motivated her to support the pupils and thanked district leaders for contributing to the team’s participation at the national competition.

She also urged parents to take an active role in supporting their children’s education and encouraged them to consider the school’s boarding programme.

Saddick Yusuf Munu, the chairperson of MDD in Dokolo District, said several schools had failed to field teams at the district level because of competing engagements.

He urged schools to give MDD greater attention, saying participation in co-curricular activities exposes pupils to opportunities beyond the district while enabling them to develop their talents and build friendships.

The District Inspector of Schools, Erechu Lameck Tonny, challenged schools that have not prioritised MDD to change their approach and begin preparations early in the third term.

He also encouraged schools to acquire the necessary musical instruments to improve their preparedness for competitions.

Erechu said the Iguli team had performed well at the national competition, although the official results had not yet been announced.

He further cautioned parents against sending children to unauthorised holiday programmes, saying such activities contravene government policy.

The district Secretary for Education, Health and Community-Based Services, Joel Opota Okuma, described sports and other co-curricular activities as an important part of education.

Okuma urged schools to strike a balance between academic work and co-curricular activities, noting that the Government is investing in the development of such activities.

He also appealed to parents to encourage children to develop their talents at home during holidays instead of leaving the responsibility entirely to schools.

Okuma pledged continued support from the district leadership to schools that represent Dokolo at national competitions.

Previous national appearance

Iguli Primary School has previously represented Dokolo District at national MDD competitions. The school participated in the national competition held in Hoima in 2013.

The latest performance has renewed calls for greater investment in co-curricular activities in schools across the district, particularly through early preparation, provision of equipment and support for talented pupils.
