Kampala, Uganda – The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced a major infrastructure project that will see Karuma Bridge, a critical link along the Kampala–Gulu Highway, temporarily closed for essential repairs from March 10 to March 31, 2025.
The works will focus on the installation of expansion joints, a crucial step toward ensuring the long-term stability and safety of the bridge.
Karuma Bridge was partially reopened on December 20, 2024, for light vehicles following urgent repairs to facilitate movement during the festive season.
However, to complete the full restoration of this strategic highway, authorities have deemed it necessary to carry out these final upgrades.
During this period, all traffic will be diverted to alternative routes to minimize disruption.
Motorists traveling between Kampala and Gulu/West Nile are advised to use the Luweero – Kafu – Masindi – Paraa (Murchison Falls National Park) – Pakwach or Gulu via Olwiyo route.
For those traveling from Kampala to Lira, the recommended route is Iganga – Nakalama – Tirinyi – Pallisa – Kumi – Soroti – Lira.
Additionally, motorists heading to Lira can opt for the Rwenkunye – Apac route via Masindi Port Ferry.
In addition to the works at Karuma, the Ministry will also install new expansion joints on Ayago Bridge, located on the Karuma–Olwiyo road.
The existing joints have suffered significant fatigue, necessitating immediate intervention to maintain road safety and efficiency.
Hon. Gen. Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining and improving Uganda’s transport infrastructure.
“We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding as we carry out these essential upgrades. The long-term benefits will ensure safer and more reliable travel for all road users,” he stated.
Motorists and the general public are urged to plan their journeys accordingly and adhere to the alternative routes provided.
The government has assured the public that every effort will be made to complete the works within the scheduled timeframe to avoid prolonged inconvenience.
