Kwania District Rolls Out UGX 1 Billion 10.5KM Owiny-Acula Wic-Adok Road Project to Enhance Agricultural Market Access

Kwania, Uganda – Kwania District Local Government has awarded a significant road construction and rehabilitation tender under the Oil Seeds program to BP Enterprise Company Ltd.

The project involves a 10.5-kilometer road stretching from Owiny through Acula Wic to the border of Adok Subcounty in Dokolo District.

This vital infrastructure development is expected to boost the transportation of agricultural produce and improve market access for farmers in the region.

While speaking to reporters on 10th January 2025, Kwania District Engineer Edward Eyak Odongo revealed that BP Enterprise Ltd secured the contract at a total cost of UGX 1,010,644,113.

The project is set to last eight months, with strict oversight to ensure quality and durability.

“We will ensure that proper work is done. In the past, residents have raised concerns about roads getting damaged shortly after construction. This time, we are committed to delivering a sustainable road that will serve the community for many years,” Eyak assured.

The selected road traverses Nambyeso Subcounty, a key agricultural hub known for cultivating soya beans and sunflower, which are essential raw materials in oil production.

The Oil Seeds program targets subcounties involved in oil crop farming to facilitate easier movement of goods and promote economic growth.

Eyak emphasized the critical role this road will play in supporting local farmers by reducing transportation costs and time, thereby enhancing the marketing of their produce.

“This road will not only benefit Kwania District but also connect us to Dokolo District, making it easier for farmers in both regions to access markets. It is part of a larger effort to improve rural infrastructure in areas where oil crops are produced,” Eyak added.

In addition to the Owiny-Acula Wic-Adok road, Eyak announced that the district plans to extend the program to another road in Abongomola Subcounty.

The ongoing roadworks in Kwania are part of a broader regional effort under the Oil Seeds program, aimed at boosting agricultural productivity in the Lango Subregion.

Lira District has already begun similar road construction in Ogur Subcounty.

The Oil Seeds program, funded by government and development partners, focuses on enhancing agricultural value chains by improving access to markets.

Better road infrastructure is expected to reduce post-harvest losses and increase farmers’ incomes, further contributing to the region’s socio-economic development.

Residents of Nambyeso Subcounty welcomed the initiative, expressing optimism that the road will improve their livelihoods by making it easier to transport produce to markets, especially during the rainy season when roads become impassable.

This latest development underscores Kwania District’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure and supporting agricultural communities.

The district leadership has pledged continued engagement with local stakeholders to ensure timely completion and long-term maintenance of the road.

With the anticipated success of this project, other subcounties in Kwania District can look forward to similar developments aimed at transforming the rural economy.
