Kampala, Uganda | The Member of Parliament for Kyoga County in Amolatar District, Hon. Angwech Colline has urged the government to establish a Fisheries Industrial Park in Amolatar District to boost value addition, create employment opportunities, and strengthen the local economy.
Speaking during the 10th Sitting of Parliament on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, Angwech said government should align its industrialisation agenda with the economic activities, natural resources and comparative advantages of different regions. She noted that fishing remains the backbone of Amolatar’s economy, with thousands of households depending on Lake Kyoga for their livelihoods.
The legislator said many residents, especially those raised in the district’s landing sites, rely on fishing to educate their children, access healthcare and earn a living, making the sector the largest source of income for many young people.
Angwech appealed to government to establish a Fisheries Industrial Park in the district to promote fish processing and value addition while creating alternative employment opportunities for the youth.
She also called for an urgent review of the recently introduced fishing regulations, saying the decision to limit each gazetted landing site to only 30 boats has left hundreds of licensed fishers without jobs.
According to the MP, many affected fishers had invested heavily in the sector after selling land and livestock to purchase the required fishing equipment, only to be locked out by the new restrictions.
While acknowledging government’s efforts to conserve fish stocks in Lake Kyoga, Angwech said sustainable conservation measures should be accompanied by alternative livelihood programmes to cushion affected communities.
She maintained that investing in fisheries-based industrialisation would not only support environmental conservation but also enhance household incomes and contribute to the country’s broader economic transformation.
