Lira City – June 10, 2024 – A storm of controversy is brewing around the management and safeguarding of the prestigious FUFA Drum Trophy, embodying regional football pride and prowess. Recent comments by Obote Kagere, a prominent committee member deeply involved in FUFA affairs, have raised concerns about the trophy’s safety and the protocol surrounding its transportation and storage.

Kagere emphasized that the trophy, procured at a significant cost of $7,000 (approximately UGX 25.9 million), should be stored securely at the FUFA Regional Office, citing the precedent set by West Nile Province. He stressed that the trophy’s significance and value warrant stringent measures to prevent damage or loss. FUFA’s policy mandates that trophies of this stature be transported separately by its officials, ensuring their integrity and safety during transit.
However, the recent friendly match involving Lango Province has stirred further controversy. Kagere questioned the sourcing of players for Lango Province, as FUFA had not issued any directive to clubs to release players for this match. This has raised concerns about potential inconsistencies and gaps in communication within the football federation.
An anonymous FUFA executive revealed that the rising costs of trophies could result in significant financial burdens for provincial teams, exceeding 30 million shillings. This underscores the broader challenges faced by regional football bodies in Uganda, including financial sustainability and communication.
The controversy highlights the importance of clear communication, adherence to established protocols, and financial prudence in sports management. As stakeholders navigate these challenges, the football community awaits clarification from FUFA on trophy management and player allocation protocols.
The resolution of these issues is crucial to ensuring the continued growth and integrity of Ugandan football. The FUFA Drum competition’s success and legacy depend on addressing these concerns, safeguarding the sport’s future prosperity.
The ongoing debate serves as a reminder of the importance of diligent sports administration. The football fraternity must work together to address these challenges, ensuring the sport’s continued excellence and unity.
