The incident occurred after Richard Waiswa, a primary six pupil, was allegedly beaten to death and dumped in a swamp upon being caught having sexual intercourse with a girl by her relatives.
In retaliation, Waiswa’s relatives targeted the home of Wilson Buga in Edovu, setting ablaze three grass-thatched houses and one semi-permanent house. The attackers also demolished other structures and destroyed crops, leaving the entire homestead in ruins.
Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed that cases of criminal trespass, arson, and malicious damage to property had been registered. However, no suspects have been arrested thus far in connection with the revenge attacks.
In a statement, Angucia emphasized the importance of adhering to the law and urged the public to refrain from taking matters into their own hands. She cautioned that any individuals found guilty of such actions will face legal consequences in courts of law.
Marlon Avutia, the mayor of Ayivu Division in Arua City, acknowledged the rising trend of revenge attacks in the area and called for immediate attention to address the issue. He further challenged the police to strengthen their community policing strategy to improve public understanding of law enforcement’s role and foster trust between the community and the police.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging residents to remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to justice and prevent further acts of violence.
