Kampala, Uganda – The government has officially signed a contract for the construction of the highly anticipated Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium, a state-of-the-art facility promised to Lango Sub-region.

The signing ceremony took place on Friday, December 6, 2024, at State House, Nakasero.

The contract was signed between the government and Egyptian firm SAMCO, with the event presided over by the Minister for Education and Sports, First Lady Janet Kataha Museveni, alongside State Minister for Sports Peter Ogwang.

“Deal done! Yesterday, we signed the contract for the construction of Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium at State House, Nakasero. The contractor SAMCO is expected to complete works in 20 months,” Ogwang posted on his X handle.

Construction is set to commence on Monday, with an initial budget of Shs100 billion released by the Ministry of Finance for the first phase of the Shs550 billion project.

Upon completion, the stadium will be among the three venues hosting the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027, co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.

The Akii-Bua Stadium is one of President Museveni’s key pledges to Lango Sub-region, aiming to honor legendary Ugandan athlete John Akii-Bua.

It will serve as a major boost to sports development and infrastructure in Northern Uganda.

Earlier delays in October raised concerns among MPs from Lango Sub-region, who accused the government of sidelining their region. However, Minister Ogwang clarified that the postponement was due to further discussions on the financing model recommended by the Ministry of Finance, reassuring stakeholders that the project was still on course.

The stadium’s construction is expected to significantly enhance Uganda’s sports infrastructure while fostering regional development.

Residents of Lango Sub-region now eagerly anticipate the groundbreaking, viewing the project as a symbol of progress and fulfillment of long-awaited promises.
