Lira Man Arrested for Allegedly Killing Wife in Domestic Violence Incident

Lira, Uganda Police in Lira City West Division have arrested a man suspected of killing his wife during a domestic fight in what authorities have described as a case of murder by assault.

The suspect, Otiri George, reportedly assaulted his wife, Ajok Santa, aged 40, on the morning of April 7, 2025, following a domestic dispute at their residence in Aminya Cell, Amuca Ward, Lira City West Division.

According to a report filed by Ekwang Nelson, the couple-who had been married for 31 years-got into a heated argument that escalated into physical violence.

Otiri is alleged to have slapped Ajok forcefully, causing her to fall and lose consciousness.

Neighbours who witnessed the incident rushed the victim to Ronam Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead the following day at around 8:30 AM.

North Kyoga Region Police Spokesperson SP Jimmy Patrick Okema confirmed the incident, noting that a team comprising the Officer-in-Charge of CID, homicide detectives and a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) visited the scene and documented the findings.

Statements from relevant witnesses were recorded.

The deceased’s body was transported to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination, while the suspect is currently in police custody as investigations continue.

SP Okema expressed concern over the increasing number of murder cases in the region, many stemming from domestic violence, suspected theft, bar brawls and superstitions involving witchcraft allegations.

“It’s quite unfortunate that we are receiving so many cases of murder due to domestic misunderstandings and other avoidable causes,” he said.

Police have reiterated their commitment to ensuring justice and urged the public to seek peaceful means of resolving conflicts.
