Lira, Uganda | Lira University has officially donated 50 acres of land to the National Council of Sports (NCS) for the construction of a Sports Stadium and training ground to support the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) football competitions.
The development was confirmed during a consultative meeting on August 14, 2025, at the Public Health Board Room, where NCS officials met with the university leadership to review the draft architectural design.
The session was presided over by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng.
Prof. Ogwal Okeng said the proposed Lira University Sports Training Pitch, whose construction is expected to commence soon, will have far-reaching benefits for Uganda, particularly for Lira University and the wider northern region.
He noted that the facility will be a catalyst for sports development, economic growth, and tourism, while also fostering youth development and community engagement.
He added that it will work hand in hand with Akibua Stadium in Lira City during AFCON 2027.
He further explained that the construction phase would create employment opportunities, while the stadium’s operations would continue to generate jobs in various sectors.
He pointed out that the anticipated influx of visitors for sporting events is expected to boost tourism and stimulate growth in local businesses, including hotels, restaurants, transport services, and craft markets.
Assoc. Prof. Okaka Opio Dokotum described the sports project as a game-changer for the region, saying its impact would extend beyond football to become a hub for youth empowerment, talent nurturing, and job creation.
On the project’s long-term value, he stressed that the facility would serve as a lasting legacy for future generations, providing opportunities for sports and community development.
Assoc. Prof. Edward Ojuka highlighted the role of modern sports infrastructure in enhancing Uganda’s international reputation.
He said it would provide local athletes with better training facilities and improve the country’s competitiveness on the global stage.
Other key benefits identified during the meeting include investment attraction through drawing both local and foreign investors to the region, infrastructure development by stimulating construction of supporting amenities such as roads and utilities, and increased revenue from ticket sales, event hosting, and commercial activities.
The project will also promote sports and youth development by offering a modern training and competition venue to groom talent and improve performance, encourage community engagement through sporting events, cultural activities, and social initiatives, and foster national pride by showcasing Uganda’s commitment to sports excellence.
The NCS team and Lira University officials concluded the meeting with a group photograph, marking a significant milestone in preparations for AFCON 2027, which will be co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
This positions Lira as a key player in Uganda’s sports development agenda and the continental football showcase.
