Kampala, Uganda – Uncertainty and emotional distress have gripped Uganda following conflicting reports about the condition of Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya, the Kawempe North MP, as the nation waits for clarity on his fate.
Early this morning, National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu posted a heartfelt tribute on his X account, confirming the MP’s passing.
“Very sad news this morning. Our brother, our friend, our fellow leader Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya has passed on. Such a dark morning,” Kyagulanyi wrote.
However, hours later, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among contradicted the initial reports, revealing that after consulting with doctors, it was confirmed that Ssegirinya still has a pulse, offering a glimmer of hope.
“He is alive. I ask you all to pray for him,” she stated, calling for the nation to join in prayer for the MP’s healing.
Reports from Lubaga Hospital confirmed the MP is critically ill, with acting executive director Sr. Grace Nanyondo stating that while his condition is dire, he has not been declared dead.
Meanwhile, NUP party officials revealed that, according to doctors, Ssegirinya’s organs are shutting down and he has been described as “brain dead.”
Kyagulanyi also acknowledged the confusion surrounding his mother’s declaration of his death after learning of his medical state.
The conflicting reports have left many questioning what exactly is happening behind the hospital doors, with friends, family, and political figures clinging to the hope that a miracle could still occur.
Emotions have been running high, as MPs and colleagues of Ssegirinya reflect on their shared struggles, including Makindye West MP Allan Ssewanyana, who tearfully expressed that “it shouldn’t have been you, Ssegirinya, to die at this time.”
