Kole, Uganda | Police in North Kyoga Region are investigating a murder by assault following the death of a 35-year-old man after a violent altercation at a local bar in Kole District.
The deceased, identified as Oboga Felix, a resident of Atek B Village in Alemi Parish, Ayer Sub-county, reportedly died after sustaining a head injury during a fight on the night of March 3.
According to the North Kyoga Regional Police spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident occurred at around 10pm at a bar owned by one Olila Tonny in Atek B Village.
It is alleged that the deceased got into a misunderstanding with a suspect identified as Omodi Denis while playing cards involving money.
“The misunderstanding escalated into a physical fight during which the suspect allegedly picked a brick and struck the deceased on the right side of the head,” Mr Okema said in a statement on Wednesday.
Felix reportedly fell to the ground following the assault and was later taken back to his home.
However, upon arrival, he collapsed and was pronounced dead.
The case was reported to police at 1:16am on March 4 by Mr Ogwal Tom, 77, a resident of the same village.
Police officers from Kole Central Police Station visited the scene alongside the District Scene of Crime Officer and homicide detectives.
The body was later conveyed to the mortuary at Lira Regional Referral Hospital pending a postmortem examination.
Investigators recovered a brick believed to have been used in the assault and recorded statements from relevant witnesses.
Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased sustained a fatal head injury caused by a blunt object.
Police say the suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident and remains at large.
Efforts to trace and arrest him are ongoing as investigations continue.
