Amolatar, Uganda | Keller Angiro, mother to Kioga County MP Moses Jr Okot Bitek, has been elected Chairperson of the NRM Elders League in Amolatar District.

She defeated former LC V Chairperson Simon Peter Ongom Sedu in an internal party election held on May 27, 2025.

Keller won with 70 votes against Ongom Sedu’s 5, securing a five-year term to lead the elderly wing of the ruling party in the district.

The NRM Elders League plays a vital role in representing older citizens’ interests and mobilising support within the party.

After her victory, Angiro expressed gratitude to the delegates for their trust and promised to focus on improving the welfare of elderly people in Amolatar.

She pledged to lobby for better access to the Senior Citizens Grant, advocate for regular mobile health outreach services tailored to older persons, and push for the establishment of elderly support centres in the district.

Keller also said she would promote income-generating projects to help seniors, especially widows and retired farmers, achieve financial independence.

She emphasized the need to actively involve elders in party decision-making and grassroots mobilisation.

Kioga County MP Okot Bitek congratulated his mother on her win, describing it as a proud moment for their family.

He highlighted her dedication to community service and urged local and national NRM leaders to support her efforts in championing elderly welfare.

He further noted that supporting the elderly should be a collective, non-partisan effort.

Observers say Angiro’s victory signals a shift towards candidates with strong community ties and development-focused agendas.

While her connection to the MP raised her profile, many delegates acknowledged her long-term engagement with elders and community groups as a key factor in her success.

The election is part of the NRM’s ongoing internal restructuring as the party prepares for the 2026 general elections.

Keller is expected to be sworn in soon at the NRM district offices in Amolatar.
