Alebtong, Uganda | Residents of Alebtong District are witnessing significant socio-economic transformation driven by various government programmes championed by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, according to district leaders.
The Deputy Resident District Commissioner of Alebtong, Mathias Lutwama, said government interventions in agriculture, education, health and wealth creation were steadily improving household incomes and service delivery across the district.
Speaking about the district’s development progress, Lutwama noted that government’s push for agro-industrialisation had led to the establishment of a sunflower processing factory in Apala Sub-county valued at approximately UGX 1 billion.
The factory, which is managed by farmers’ cooperatives in partnership with local farmers from the Lango sub-region, is aimed at boosting value addition and creating sustainable markets for sunflower growers.
Lutwama explained that the district is witnessing practical economic empowerment through industrialisation, adding that farmers are now participating directly in value addition instead of selling raw products.
In the education sector, the district continues to benefit from increased government funding under the Universal Primary Education programme. Alebtong’s 76 government-aided primary schools currently receive about UGX 3.3 billion annually in capitation grants.
District officials say the funding has contributed to increased pupil enrollment, which now stands at an estimated 106,000 learners.
Lutwama also praised the impact of the Parish Development Model (PDM), describing it as a major tool in mobilising households into the money economy.
According to district records, at least 8,151 women have benefited from the revolving funds since the programme was introduced in June 2023. In addition, about 5,672 youths engaged in agriculture, piggery, and goat rearing have also accessed financial support.
He further explained that the programme had revived community mobilisation and transformed the mindset of many people, especially among women and the youth.
The health sector has equally registered improvements, with all the 15 government health facilities in the district reportedly operating under improved infrastructure conditions through results-based financing.
District authorities say better healthcare services have contributed to a healthier population and improved access to preventive and curative care.
Lutwama revealed that Alebtong’s female population currently stands at about 156,000 while the male population is estimated at 127,000, excluding children.
He added that the district’s next priority would be to strengthen monitoring and implementation of government programmes in all the 725 villages to ensure effective service delivery and accountability.
Lutwama emphasized that the district leadership was now focusing on qualitative implementation and ensuring that government programmes directly benefit ordinary wananchi.
