New Brooms at LPG: Can Ogwang Obura’s Team Deliver for Lango?

Kampala, Uganda | The Lango Parliamentary Group (LPG) has ushered in a new leadership team pledging to deepen unity among legislators and strengthen coordinated efforts toward development across the sub-region.

Patrick Ogwang Obura has been elected Chairperson of the group (2026–2031), taking over from former leadership under Kole District Woman MP Judith Alyek, who chaired the 11th Parliament caucus (2021–2026).

Ogwang Obura, the Oyam South legislator, said his leadership would focus on uniting all Members of the 12th Parliament from Lango under a shared development agenda that cuts across political and religious divisions. He emphasized stronger coordination between MPs, mayors, and lower local government leaders to enhance service delivery and ensure measurable development outcomes within the sub-region.

The elections, held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, were presided over by Minister for Disaster Preparedness and Refugees Sam Engola. A statement released by the newly elected Publicity Secretary, Dokolo North County MP Joseph Jones Ogwal, confirmed that government ministers who attended the meeting called for discipline, teamwork, and strict adherence to parliamentary rules.

Those present included Government Chief Whip Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, Minister of State for Economic Monitoring in the Office of the President Santa Alum Ogwang, and Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs Dr. Mercy Lakisa, who jointly urged MPs to prioritise unity and coordinated leadership for regional transformation.

The leaders also congratulated President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for appointing several leaders from Lango into cabinet positions, describing it as a boost to the sub-region’s representation in national decision-making. Members further committed to strengthening cross-party collaboration in advancing constituency development priorities.

In the chairperson race, Ogwang Obura defeated Kole North County MP Dr. Samuel Opio Acuti, after polling 11 votes against 9.

Amolatar District WMP Janet Auma Okao was elected Vice Chairperson after securing 15 votes, defeating Dokolo South County MP Vincent Opito, who garnered 10 votes.

For Publicity Secretary, Ogwal Jones Joseph defeated Ajuri County MP Fred Jalameso with 14 votes against 10. Otuke East County MP Julius Acon Bua retained the treasurer position whom he held in the previous leadership after securing 19 votes against 5 that was polled by Dokolo District WMP Sarah Aguti Nyangkori.

Kioga County MP Colline Angwech went unopposed as General Secretary.

The Lango Parliamentary Group brings together 31 legislators representing constituencies across the districts in within the sub-region, including Oyam, Dokolo, Kole, Lira, Alebtong, Amolatar, Apac, Otuke, and Kwania, to collectively advance socio-economic development and regional interests.
