Olobo Odur Seeks Forgiveness from Won Nyaci Odongo Okune, Urges Case Withdrawal Amid Mediation Talks

Lira, Uganda | Efforts to foster unity within the Lango Cultural Institution took centre stage during a radio discussion after the Paramount Chief’s spokesperson, Patrick Okwir, emphasized dialogue and legal clarity regarding a criminal case involving Anthony Olobo Odur.

Speaking on the Afternoon Drive Show programme on Unity FM, Okwir reiterated the reconciliation message earlier delivered by Won Nyaci Moses Michael Odongo Okune during a recent unity gathering. He noted that the cultural leader had called for forgiveness, reconciliation, and collective responsibility among the people of Lango, even asking to be pardoned for any personal misgivings.

However, Okwir clarified that the matter currently before court is criminal in nature and not a private dispute that can be resolved unilaterally. He explained that the alleged offence reportedly affected Won Nyaci’s family and that the case is being prosecuted by the state, with the cultural leader appearing as a witness.

He stressed that any possible withdrawal of the case would have to follow established legal procedures and involve consultations among the relevant authorities, underscoring that the institution respects the rule of law.

Okwir further offered to facilitate a meeting between Olobo Odur and Won Nyaci to explore an amicable resolution. He said the institution remains open to dialogue and encouraged the use of traditional structures, including engagement through clan leaders, to restore harmony.

Also speaking during the programme, Omola-col Odyek Onywal Iceng Clan Chief (Awitong), George Ojwang Opota expressed readiness to mediate between the two parties. He pledged to help secure an audience with the Won Nyaci in the spirit of reconciliation and cultural unity.

Ojwang emphasized that disputes within the cultural institution should, where possible, be resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding, noting that unity among leaders is critical for the stability and progress of Lango.

Earlier in the programme, Atek Omonpel Clan Chief (Awitong), Anthony Olobo Odur, son of the late Yosam Odur Ebii, had appealed to Odongo Okune to withdraw the criminal case against him, arguing that the recent reconciliation message should be reflected in action. He said he is scheduled to appear in court on March 11 and appealed for forgiveness so he can mourn his late father in peace.

Although he initially objected to meeting the cultural leader and insisted on unconditional withdrawal of the case, Olobo Odur later agreed, albeit hesitantly, to attend a reconciliation meeting if arrangements are made.
