Kampala, Uganda | Kanyum County Member of Parliament Simon Peter Opolot has been elected chairperson of the Teso Parliamentary Group (TPG), taking over from former Usuk County MP Bosco Okiror in a leadership transition that members say is aimed at strengthening unity and accelerating development in the sub-region.
The election followed a vetting process conducted by a committee chaired by Orungo County MP Jeje Odongo. The committee included Vice President Jessica Alupo, Clement Ongalo Obote, Sidronius Opolot Okaasai, Calvin Echodu and Peter Paul Emaju.
Emmanuel Omoding, the Serere County MP, was elected Vice Chairperson, while Peter Paul Emaju (Kasilo County) became Secretary General. Alfred Edakasi, MP for Kaberamaido, was elected Treasurer, and Christine Apolot, the Kumi District Woman MP, was named Publicity Secretary.
Other members of the executive include Fredrick Angura, MP for Tororo South, and Jane Francis Amongin, Kaberamaido District Woman MP, who will oversee cultural affairs. David Beecham Okwere, the Bukedea County MP, was elected Investment Secretary.
Addressing members after the election, Secretary General Peter Paul Emaju said the executive would immediately begin putting in place governance structures to guide the group’s operations.
He said the leadership plans to develop a five-year strategic framework to coordinate the work of Teso legislators and address the region’s priority development needs.
Emaju added that the executive intends to meet President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to present key concerns affecting the Teso sub-region and seek government support for development programmes.
He also said Vice President Jessica Alupo urged the new leadership to work in unity and avoid the divisions that affected the previous administration, noting that cooperation among legislators is critical to advancing the interests of the region.
The newly elected executive pledged to work collectively, strengthen engagement with stakeholders and advocate for investments that improve the livelihoods of the people of Teso.
